Solidigm, a subsidiary of SK hynix, unveiled the world's first liquid-cooled enterprise solid state drive (eSSD) at the NVIDIA GTC conference. The D7-PS1010 E1.S eliminates the disadvantages of traditional liquid cooling systems, allowing servers to be built without air cooling at all. Solidigm notes that traditional direct liquid cooling (DLC) solutions for eSSDs do not effectively cool both sides of the drive and do not allow hot swapping, resulting in system downtime while swapping is performed. The D7-PS1010 E1.S addresses these issues as the platters have been designed to maintain optimal temperatures on both sides of the drive. In addition, the clever design allows for hot-swapping of the SSD using a spring-loaded mechanism. Solidigm officials claim that the new eSSD eliminates the 1U rack design with fans, reducing cooling costs for data centers. The company believes that widespread adoption of such drives could set the standard for future data centers that are designed with liquid cooling infrastructure in mind. The D7-PS1010 E1.S is scheduled for release in the second half of 2025. |
