Seagate has announced the start of shipments of its latest 44 TB Exos hard drives. The HDDs are based on the Mozaic 4+ platform, which uses the company's proprietary heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. The Seagate Mozaic 4+ platform includes 10 platters, each with a capacity of over 4 TB, allowing for a total maximum capacity of 44 TB. By spinning at 7200 rpm, the new HDDs deliver high performance, reaching data transfer speeds of around 300 MB/s. Also, according to the manufacturer, Exos HDDs increase overall system efficiency by approximately 47%, allowing large companies to reduce the area of their data storage clusters by approximately 9 m2, reducing annual energy consumption by approximately 0.8 million kilowatt-hours. The new Seagate HDD is currently available in only one memory configuration. The industry believes that Seagate announced the launch of 44-terabyte hard drives following the announcement by its main competitor, Western Digital, of the launch of its 40 TB proprietary solutions. Unlike Seagate Exos, these drives rely on ePMR and UltraSMR technologies, while analogues with the more advanced HAMR will only appear in 2027. |
