Sabrent has launched the Rocket Nano 2242 Gen4 compact NVMe SSD. The new product is designed for use in portable gaming consoles, tablets, laptops, and PCs where space for installing full-size M.2 2260 and 2280 SSD formats may not be enough. The M.2 2242 NVMe drive format is not as common as the others. Especially now that Valve has popularized the M.2 2230 form factor, which is used in its Steam Deck portable gaming console. However, one of the advantages of the M.2 2242 format over the M.2 2230 format is that it allows twice as many NAND flash memory chips to be placed on an SSD, thus allowing for higher capacity drives. In addition, the M.2 2242 SSD format is the primary format for Lenovo's Legion Go portable gaming console, which is a direct and very worthy competitor to the Steam Deck. The Sabrent Rocket Nano 2242 Gen4 drive utilizes an energy-efficient Phison E27T controller and 162-layer BiCS6 TLC NAND flash memory chips from Kioxia. The novelty has no DRAM-buffer. The manufacturer claims for the SSD sequential read and write speeds of up to 5 Gbytes/sec. The main selling feature of Sabrent Rocket Nano 2242 Gen4 is its support for PCIe 4.0 interface - this is the first M.2 2242 NVMe drive from Sabrent with such a characteristic. The Rocket Nano 2242 Gen4 is only available in a single 1TB capacity and is priced at $99.99. However, given that there are already 2TB M.2 2230 compact NVMe storage models from other vendors, it is possible that Sabrent will also release 2TB and even 4TB Rocket Nano 2242 Gen4 models in the future, as the SSD form factor allows for this. |
