The portable gaming PC market is growing rapidly and may soon see another big name join the fray. GIGABYTE CEO Eddie Lin announced at CES 2026 that the company is indeed considering releasing its own portable device, but only on one condition. The device must offer a unique experience and not be just another Steam Deck clone. According to Lin, developing the gadget is no longer a problem. The production chains are well-established, ODM partners in China have long been able to assemble such gadgets, and the key components are available. The real challenge is to figure out why the market needs another such device if it offers nothing new compared to other consoles. Major competitors include Valve, ASUS, MSI, and Lenovo. There are also a large number of Chinese manufacturers, such as AyaNeo, GPD, and One Netbook. And that's just talking about consoles for running PC games. We shouldn't forget about Nintendo, and in the future, Sony may also return to the portable console market. Theoretically, GIGABYTE could compete on price, but even here, things are not so simple: memory and SSDs continue to rise in price, which means that making a truly inexpensive device without compromises is almost impossible. Therefore, GIGABYTE is in no hurry to invest in the release of a device that will not be able to occupy its niche. |
