WD releases a 32TB classic HDD |
|
Following the Toshiba hard disk drive of impressive capacity in the market of classic drives and noted the company Western Digital, presenting even more capacious ?hard? for 32 TB in a standard case. The manufacturer explained how it managed to achieve this figure. The Ultrastar DC HC690 SMR drive is built with energy-efficient perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR) and next-generation UltraSMR tiled magnetic recording technologies. Thanks to them, the vendor managed to increase storage density by 20% compared to models based on perpendicular magnetic recording (CMR) technology. The hard disk is based on 11 platters with a maximum spindle speed of 7200 rpm. Cache memory capacity is 512 MB, read speed - up to 269 MB/s, write speed - up to 257 MB/s. Claimed endurance is 2.5 million hours of operation and the factory limited warranty is five years. Among other HDD features, the company highlights support for OptiNAND technology (uses the disk's flash memory for its maintenance) and ArmorCache (protection against power failures). The novelty will be delivered to the corporate market with SATA-3 and SAS-3 interfaces. In addition, Western Digital introduced Ultrastar DC HC590 CMR disk for 26 TB, built on the technology of perpendicular magnetic recording (CMR). It features a 512MB buffer size, 7200RPM, read speeds up to 302MB/s and write speeds up to 288MB/s. The Ultrastar line is focused on Ultrastar Data60 and Data102 JBOD platforms, which are usually installed in data centers. These HDDs are unlikely to be available at retail. |
