Samsung has released the fastest SSD for computers |
|
The South Korean company announced that it has begun mass production of its fastest PCle 5.0 solid state drive (SSD) for personal computers. The PM9E1 achieves the highest speed performance by integrating Samsung's 5nm controller and eighth-generation V-NAND technology. Compared to its predecessor (PM9A1a), the PM9E1 improves all key features including performance, storage capacity, power efficiency and security. With an eight-lane PCIe 5.0 interface, the new SSD's sequential read and write speeds have more than doubled to 14.5GB/s and 13GB/s, respectively. The high speeds are especially important in data-intensive AI applications, allowing 14GB of large language model (LLM) to be transferred from SSD to DRAM in less than a second. At the same time, power consumption has been reduced by as much as 50%. The PM9E1 is available in 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB versions. The new SSD will initially be available only to PC manufacturers, with a consumer version coming later. |
